Montclair’s First Adult-Use Cannabis Dispensary Opens

Ascend Montclair, which operated as Greenleaf Compassion Center at 395 Bloomfield Avenue for several years prior to being taken over by Ascend in 2015, operates stores in Massachusetts, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio.

Employees at Ascend’s Montclair dispensary have successfully ratified their first union contract. Under it, employees will gain more paid time off and an opportunity to influence workplace conditions.

New York-based multistate vertically operator Greenleaf Compassion Center acquired by Ascend in 2021 was previously unable to sell recreational pot.

Ascend Montclair is a walk-in retail shop dedicat to adult use of marijuana, offering customers products on kiosks while being assist by staff who provide information about medical conditions that can be treat using cannabis. Formerly known as Greenleaf Compassion Center, this location now belongs to multi-state cannabis company Ascend Wellness Holdings and will sell both products.

Ascend’s Montclair location employs 22 budtenders who recently signed their first union contract. Working under IUJAT membership will now gain annual wage increases and improved health benefits.

Ascend’s Montclair location may be smaller than Rochelle Park’s location – which currently serves 2,000 customers daily – but Ascend still expects it to be very busy. Furthermore, plans exist for future locations to open across Essex County.
